Who provides it: national examples
A short list of examples, not a full directory. For three kinds of finance, an official list or data set picks out a few large firms by a rule we state: the SBA lenders that lend in almost every state, the largest SBICs, and the crowdfunding platforms most offerings go through. Most lenders work in one state or a few: to find them, use the official searches for your state.
Being listed is not an endorsement, and a firm not listed is no worse for it. Each firm is here only because the rule stated above its list picked it out. Whether one will lend to you or invest is for you and the firm: check the terms with it, and check it on the register for its kind before you sign.
SBA 7(a) lenders that lend across the country
How these were chosen: The lenders that made SBA 7(a) loans to businesses in at least 45 of the 50 states in fiscal year 2025 (October 2024 to September 2025), from the SBA's own 7(a) Lender Activity Report. There were 13, and between them they made 48% of the 78,011 7(a) loans that year. One has since merged into another, so 12 are listed.
1,426 lenders made 7(a) loans that year, and 861 of them made loans in only one state or territory. A local lender may know your market better: your state's page links to the SBA's own searches.

Small Business Investment Companies (SBICs)
How these were chosen: The 10 largest by fund size of the 240 SBICs that the SBA's directory shows as making new investments (it lists 376). SBICs are private investment funds licensed by the SBA. The directory gives where each fund's office is, not where it invests.
SBICs invest larger sums: of the 142 funds making new investments that the directory gives an average investment for, 133 put in $1 million or more on average. Its filters find funds by strategy and by the state of their office.

Eight are funding portals on FINRA's list; two are broker-dealers.
Listed by name only. We never name an offering on any of them, and listing one is not a view on any investment. FINRA's list has every funding portal it regulates.

Find a lender in your state
SBA 504 lenders, SBA microloan lenders, community lenders (CDFIs), banks and credit unions mostly work in one state or a few, so we name none of them here. Each state's page links to the official searches, filtered to that state where the search allows it:
- SBA 504 lenders (Certified Development Companies): The nonprofit lenders that make SBA 504 loans for property and big equipment, from the SBA's own list, filtered to the state.
- SBA microloan lenders: Nonprofit lenders that make SBA microloans of up to $50,000, from the SBA's own list, filtered to the state.
- SBA Lender Match: The SBA's own matching tool: you answer a few questions about your business on its site, and two business days later it gives you a list of the lenders interested; some may contact you. It is not a loan application. What you type goes to the SBA and those lenders, not to us.
- Certified CDFIs (community lenders): The CDFI Fund's list of every certified community development financial institution (CDFI): loan funds, banks and credit unions. Download the list and sort it by the State column.
- Banks: The FDIC's BankFind: search for the banks with offices in the state.
- Credit unions: The NCUA's credit union locator. Credit unions lend to their members, so check who can join.

Factoring companies, equipment finance companies, merchant cash advance providers, online lenders and brokers have no official national list to choose from, so we name none. Before you sign with one, check it is licensed: Check a lender or platform says which register to search, and your state's page names its lending regulator. Stock exchanges are on the listing route's page.
